«كتاب الشهر» أول مشروع نشر شهري من نوعه في مصر، أطلقه محمد صبيح عن دار الثقافة العامة في أواخر الثلاثينيات، وقدّم للقارئ العربي سِيَر زعماء العالم في لحظة صناعتهم لا بعد رحيلهم: هتلر وستالين وموسوليني وأتاتورك والميكادو وغاندي وديفاليرا. صدرت هذه الأجزاء بينما كانت أوروبا تقف على حافة الحرب العالمية الثانية، فجاءت وثيقة مزدوجة: عن الرجال الذين كتبت عنهم، وعن الطريقة التي قرأت بها النخبة المصرية العالم في تلك السنوات.
الجزءان الأولان بقلم محمد صبيح، الكاتب والمؤرخ وأحد قيادات حزب مصر الفتاة ومؤسس الصحافة التعاونية، وصاحب خمسة وستين مؤلفًا. والجزءان الآخران بقلم فتحي رضوان، السياسي والمفكر المصري وأول وزير للإرشاد القومي بعد ثورة يوليو، وصاحب «عصر ورجال».
يضم المجلد بأغلفته الأصلية الملوّنة — بتصميماتها الطباعية اللافتة من ثلاثينيات القاهرة — ورسومًا بورتريهية داخلية بالفحم، وفهارس ومراجع السلسلة، وإعلانات دار الثقافة العامة عن إصداراتها وأسعارها بالقروش والمليمات. جُمعت الأجزاء الأربعة لاحقًا في تجليد نصف جلد فاخر بكعب مذهّب، ما يجعل المجلد قطعة واحدة متكاملة يصعب جمعها متفرقة اليوم.

Kitab Al-Shahr was the first monthly publishing project of its kind in Egypt, launched by Muhammad Sabih through Dar Al-Thaqafa Al-Amma in the late 1930s. Its "World Leaders" series brought Arab readers the lives of Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, Atatürk, the Mikado, Gandhi and De Valera while those figures were still shaping events — published as Europe stood on the edge of the Second World War. The volume is therefore a double document: of the men it portrays, and of how Egypt's literary press read the world in those years.
The first two titles are by Muhammad Sabih, historian, leading figure of the Young Egypt party and author of sixty-five books. The other two are by Fathi Radwan, Egyptian thinker and politician, the first Minister of National Guidance after the July Revolution and author of "Asr wa Rijal".
Bound in are the striking original 1930s Cairo cover designs, interior charcoal portrait drawings, series indexes and bibliographies, and publisher's advertisements listing prices in piastres and millièmes. The four parts were later gathered into a fine half-leather binding with a gilt spine, making this a single complete volume that would be very difficult to assemble separately today.
