رحل محمد لبيب البتنوني إلى إسبانيا سنة 1926، وكان يبعث من هناك رسائله إلى جريدة الأهرام تحت عنوان «جولة في إسبانيا». ثم جمعها في هذا الكتاب وزاد عليها ما تكمل به فائدتها، فصارت عشر رسائل تمشي بالقارئ من قرطبة إلى إشبيلية إلى غرناطة، تصف الطريق والمناخ والعمران وما بقي من آثار العرب، وتقف عند تاريخ كل موضع بالعِظة المستخلَصة منه.
ويقول البتنوني في مقدمته إنه تعمّد الابتعاد عن كل ما يؤثّر في العاطفة الدينية أو القومية بالتطرف في المدح أو النقد — وهو ما جعل الكتاب يُقرأ حتى اليوم بوصفه رحلة أمينة لا خطبة حماسية. وقد ذيّل رسائله بقاموس موجز لأسماء البلاد في عهد العرب وما يقابلها من الأسماء الإفرنجية، وأضاف خريطة مطوية لإسبانيا والبرتغال وفرنسا تبيّن مواقع البلاد التي بلغها الفتح، وصوراً فوتوغرافية للحمراء وقاعة السفراء وحوش السباع وغيرها.
📌 عن ختم التملّك: تحمل صفحة العنوان ختماً بالحبر الأزرق لأستاذ بكلية اللغة العربية، وإلى جانبه توقيعه بخط اليد. وهذا ما يُسمّى في سوق المقتنيات «توثيق الملكية» (Provenance): أثرٌ يثبت أن النسخة كانت في حوزة شخص بعينه، فيتحوّل الكتاب من نسخة مجهولة التاريخ إلى نسخة لها سيرة معروفة. وكلما كان المالك السابق من أهل العلم في تخصص الكتاب، ارتفعت قيمة النسخة عند الجامعين — لأن الأثر لا يُستنسخ ولا يوجد في نسخة أخرى.

📖 💎 ( 188 ) Rihlat al-Andalus (A Journey to Andalusia) - First edition, 1927
Muhammad Labib al-Batnuni travelled to Spain in 1926, sending letters home to the Cairo newspaper Al-Ahram under the title "A Tour in Spain". He later gathered them into this book with additions, forming ten letters that carry the reader from Cordoba to Seville to Granada - describing the roads, the climate, the architecture and what remained of Arab monuments, pausing at the history of each place for the lesson it holds.
In his preface al-Batnuni states that he deliberately avoided anything that stirs religious or national feeling through excessive praise or blame - which is why the book still reads as an honest travelogue rather than a rallying speech. He appended a concise dictionary of place names as they were under Arab rule with their European equivalents, added a folding map of Spain, Portugal and France marking the reach of the Arab conquest, and included photographs of the Alhambra, the Hall of the Ambassadors, the Court of the Lions and others.
📌 On the ownership stamp: the title page carries a blue-ink stamp of a professor at the College of Arabic Language, with his handwritten signature beside it. This is what the collectors' market calls provenance: evidence that a copy passed through the hands of a specific person, turning a book of unknown history into one with a documented life. The more the former owner belonged to the scholarly world of the book's own subject, the more collectors value the copy - because such a mark cannot be reproduced and exists in no other copy.
