عرض تاريخي موثّق لحياة وإنجازات الشيخ زايد بن سلطان آل نهيان، حاكم إمارة أبوظبي وأول رئيس لدولة الإمارات العربية المتحدة. ترتكز الدراسة في سياقها الزمني على فترة ربع قرن تمتد من ١٩٤٦م إلى ١٩٧١م، تسلّم فيها الشيخ زايد الحكم ونال الشهرة، وتحوّل من قائد قبلي إلى رئيس لدولة حديثة.
يقوم الكتاب على بحث مضنٍ في السجلات الأرشيفية البريطانية، ويقدّم تحليلات دقيقة للأحداث والشخصيات المعاصرة التي مثّلت منعطفات مهمة في تاريخ الإمارات. يبدأ من عام ١٩٤٦م حين صار زايد ممثلًا للحاكم في العين، وعشرين سنة قضاها في الواحة عرف خلالها بـ«شيخ الصحراء»، مرورًا بأزمات الخمسينيات والستينيات والنزاع حول البريمي وأم الزمول، ثم توليه حكم أبوظبي عام ١٩٦٦م، وصولًا إلى قيام الاتحاد في الثاني من ديسمبر ١٩٧١م.
يتضمن الكتاب ملاحق وثائقية مصوّرة من الأرشيف البريطاني، وصورًا تاريخية ملوّنة وبالأبيض والأسود، وفهرسًا وثبتًا للمراجع.
يتصدّر كل مجلد إهداء مطبوع باسم سمو الشيخ منصور بن زايد آل نهيان إلى روح والده الشيخ زايد.

A documented historical account of the life and achievements of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, Ruler of Abu Dhabi and the first President of the United Arab Emirates. The study covers the quarter century from 1946 to 1971, during which Sheikh Zayed rose to power and transformed from a tribal leader into the president of a modern state.
Built on exhaustive research in British archival records, the book offers detailed analysis of the events and figures that marked turning points in the history of the Emirates: Zayed's twenty years as the Ruler's Representative in Al Ain oasis, where he became known as "Sheikh of the Desert"; the crises of the 1950s and 1960s including the Buraimi dispute and Umm Al Zumool; his accession as Ruler of Abu Dhabi in 1966; and the founding of the Union on 2 December 1971.
The book includes facsimile documentary appendices from the British archives, historical photographs in colour and black and white, an index and a bibliography.
Each volume opens with a printed dedication in the name of H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan to the memory of his father, Sheikh Zayed.
